
Comptonia peregrina sweet fern
Sweet fern native to North America is an underused but lovely low growing shrub that is ideal for difficult sites as it will grow in infertile, compacted soil with high heat , wind and salt conditions. It forms healthy dense mounds to 3 feet.
Ferny textured fragrant leaves on this plant that is related to bayberry is sometimes used medicinally . It does not like wet soils. It grows in places like Algonquin Park but until recently has been difficult to find in the trade due to difficulty in propagation.
