Asimina Triloba Paw Paw
Paw paws are a carolinian tree related to the custard apple.
It is found in well-drained, moist, deep, fertile soil and does well as an understory tree. A colony-forming tree, it is better suited to the edge of a woodland than a city lot. It would be good for naturalizing along a stream.
The unusual purple flower is followed by greenish yellow fruit that turns brownish black when ripe. It tastes of banana pear with the texture of a ripe banana. It is highly nutritious and appeals to animals especially racoons.
