Our native spice bush has small yellow flowers in early spring before the leaves appear followed by scarlet half inch drupes in fall that are quite showy until the migrating birds find them and they quickly disappear. The leaves provide food for swallowtail butterfly larva. In sun the habit of this small tree is is full and bushy, in shade, graceful and open. It is good for naturalizing.
