Persian ironwood is a rare specimen tree that offers many seasons of interest. With its spidery red burgundy flowers in Feb-March and multicolour bark patches of lime, mauve, tan it is one of the showiest winter trees we can grow, hardy to zone 5. Tolerant of heat, drought and crappy soil conditions, it is a native of Afghanistan and Iran.
The spring leaves are edged in burgundy as shown while the autumn foliage blends golden orange with red and purple. Beautiful paired with the Shantung maple, Acer truncatum, that is also heat and drought tolerant and has burgundy edged leaves in spring as well. An excellent choice for a backyard or street tree.
