A handsome native shrubby tree to 15 feet with lustrous dark green leaves in summer turning yellow in fall. Small fragrant white flowers are followed by papery wafer seeds that persist into winter. Endangered species, it is found naturally in Ontario in only a few areas around Lake Erie. It is a host plant for the giant swallowtail butterfly. Grows in sun or shade, performs best on well-drained soils.
